| In the beginning | They keep
coming (orange arch start line in background) |
| On this morning, Sunday, October 22, 2000, I went to see
the beginning of the 25th running of the Marine Corps Marathon. This was
my first time to do so. It was a marvelous scene. There was a lot of
energy and good nature in the crowd of spectators . . . with something
like 20,000 runners in the race, many had friends & family running. On
Metro, on the way over to Arlington for the 8:30am start, there were runners
among us, readying themselves for the feat to be performed, heightening the
sense of anticipation. Many of us got off at the Arlington Memorial
Cemetery stop. These pictures were all taken within a few hundred yards of
the station (pretty amazing!) from the vicinity of a bridge over Jefferson Davis
Highway. The runners would pass this point 3 times in the course of the
race, at the start, coming back from the opposite direction (mile 6), and near
the end (mile 25.5 or so). Alas, I didn't wait until the end, though I now
wish I had, so that my pictures might have told a more complete story . . . oh
well, maybe next year. For a 'superb,' higher resolution download of any
of these pictures for your personal enjoyment, just click on the image.
